Antonio Ligabue exhibition in Sorrento
From 5 August to 16 November 2024, the halls of Villa Fiorentino in Sorrento (located just over 20 kilometres from our boutique hotel) will host an unmissable exhibition dedicated to Antonio Ligabue (formerly Antonio Laccabue; Zurich 1899 – Gualtieri 1965), one of the protagonists of 20th century art and a great expressionist on a par with Van Gogh and Munch. His works continue to fascinate thousands of people, his extraordinary life has been recounted in television dramas and his very existence is seen almost as the symbol of a revenge that came about through art.
The exhibition, curated by Marzio Dall’Acqua in collaboration with Ligabue Art Projects, is an exemplary excursus that tells the story of the artist’s tormented soul clearly recognisable in his aesthetics. The exhibition presents over sixty works by Ligabue. These include 52 of his famous oil paintings (including masterpieces such as ‘Portrait of Elba’, ‘Tiger, Snake, Gazelle’, ‘Eagle with Fox’, ‘Head of Tiger’, ‘Leopard’, ‘Leopard on the Rock’, ‘Black Widow’, ‘Wild Cat with Kite’), as well as the iconic self-portraits through which the artist expresses his existential pain, shouting it out with the urgency of an intense and feral sensitivity. The nature painted by Ligabue is the theatre of implacable violence, and from his works transpire anguish, loneliness, the instinctive struggle to survive and obtain one’s place in the world, the visceral desire for love and sociality that are needs shared by every man and remain relevant in every age. Also on show is a nucleus of intense sculptures, “the bestiary of Ligabue the sculptor”, as Mario De Micheli called it, representing one of the great moments of 20th century Italian sculpture.
