Digiacomiana exhibition in Praiano
From 14 December 2024 until 12 January 2025, the photographic and documentary exhibition ‘Digiacomiana’ will be held in the chapel of Praiano’s evocative and elegant ex Congrega del Rosario (Piazza San Luca). Sponsored by the Municipality of Praiano and realised with the support of the Praiano Chambre and Jazz Music Association and the collaboration of the Distretto Turistico Costa d’Amalfi, the exhibition celebrates the poet, playwright and essayist Salvatore Di Giacomo. He was the author of well-known poems in Neapolitan (many of which were later set to music) that form an important part of Neapolitan and Campanian poetry and music.
The exhibition is dedicated to the substantial segment of his poetic production that, especially between 1882 and 1906, found a refined musical transposition, elevating the Neapolitan song to an expression of art. Through scores, period photographs and rare documents taken from the historical archive of the Bideri Foundation (a non-profit institution that focuses its activities on the promotion and enhancement of Neapolitan culture), Salvatore Di Giacomo’s natural inclination to decline arias and sonnets into song form is first of all highlighted. The exhibition then gives an account of how the poet modernised the Neapolitan language and how he revised many of his texts over time. The exhibition also highlights the fusion of elements of subjective poetry and elements of popular tradition present in some of his compositions. Lastly, it gives space to the extensive anecdotal evidence linked to the figure of the poet.
Access to the exhibition is free of charge.
