Gerardo Sacco’s goldsmith art on display in Sorrento

The Sorrento Foundation, based in Villa Fiorentino (located in Sorrento, just over 20 kilometres from our boutique hotel), has devised a programme of events and exhibitions dedicated to Made in Italy (a brand of excellence in Italian craftsmanship and industry, as well as an icon of unrivalled style and quality). “Ritratti di Made in Italy: Arte e Cultura da esportazione” is the title of the event, which will run from April 2024 to 2025 with the aim of promoting national excellence through the stories of its protagonists.

At the heart of this initiative are four exhibitions, curated by the expert art historian Filomena Maria ‘Mimma’ Sardella, focusing on four internationally renowned Italian art sectors: Sacco Gioielli, E. Marinella, Ascione Coralli and the masters of Tarsia Sorrentina. The first exhibition, scheduled from Saturday 13 April to Sunday 26 May (at Villa Fiorentino, of course), is entitled “Nel Segno della Tradizione: L’Arte Orafa di Gerardo Sacco“.

The exhibition is dedicated to the creations of Gerardo Sacco, considered one of the masters of the Italian goldsmith’s art, whose inspiration comes from the traditions and history of his homeland, Crotone. After various experiences and a period of training in Valenza Po, in the province of Alessandria, he decided to return to Calabria and set up his own handicraft business, Sacco Gioielli, in 1963. From the outset, it has distinguished itself as an ambassador of elegance and refinement, exalting the prestige of Made in Italy in the world of jewellery. Throughout its 60-year career, Sacco has created jewellery for film and theatre sets. On the big screen, ‘Otello’ and ‘Il giovane Toscanini’, both directed by Franco Zeffirelli, deserve a mention, while on the opera stage, his jewellery has embellished, among others, two prestigious productions (also directed by Zeffirelli): ‘Aida’, staged at the Rome Opera in 1990; and ‘Don Carlos’, with Luciano Pavarotti, staged at La Scala in Milan in 1992. His creations have always been loved and appreciated by divas of the calibre of Liz Taylor and Monica Bellucci, to name but a few.
