Locations of the film The Equalizer 3
‘The Equalizer 3’ is the third and final chapter in the action saga inspired by the 1980s TV series “A vigilante in New York”. Directed by US director Antoine Fuqua, it boasts a truly exceptional cast including, among others, Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, David Denman, Sonia Ammar, Remo Girone and Eugenio Mastrandrea. The plot, as in the previous chapters, revolves around the adventures of Robert McCall (played by Denzel Washington), a retired ex-marine and secret DIA agent who, since giving up his life as a government assassin, finds solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed.
In this final chapter, an investigation into shady dealings brings the protagonist to a small village in Southern Italy, where he surprisingly finds himself at home. The place and the people who live there delight him so much that he almost puts aside his activity as an avenger. The quietness, however, is destined to be short-lived. When he discovers that his new friends are under the control of the local boss, it does not take him long to get back into action again, challenging the criminal power without setting himself any limits.
The film was shot entirely in Italy, between the Amalfi Coast and Naples (as well as at Cinecittà Studios). But what are the locations of the set? Let’s discover them together!
Altamonte, the village where McCall performs his miraculous feats, does not actually exist. The scenes were filmed in Atrani, a picturesque village on the Amalfi Coast (and the smallest municipality in southern Italy) that has preserved much of its original structure, made up of narrow streets, arches, small squares and the characteristic ‘scalinatelle’. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Bando, an ancient chapel clinging to the rock on the southern slopes of Mount Aureo, appears in the film and is reached by climbing hundreds of steps. As for Aminah’s café, it was reconstructed in the village square. Among the shots that involved Atrani were a procession with fireworks and a beach party.
On the Amalfi State Road at Punta del Vento (‘a Pont ro’ vient), between Capo d’Orso and Erchie in the municipality of Maiori, an action scene with a gunfight was filmed. Maiori, with its seafront promenade, was also the backdrop for a motorbike chase at night.
Instead, in Minori, a small but delightful town that has been considered a holiday destination since ancient times, the wedding scene was filmed, involving the entire square in front of the Basilica of Santa Trofimena (the town’s main religious building), where the characteristic festive illuminations and tables set for diners were set up.
The filming then involved Naples, where some scenes were shot in the central Piazza del Gesù, at the Montesanto funicular and along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, as well as in the many characteristic alleys of the historic centre between Via Sedile di Porto and Via Sant’Aspreno.
