Sports to do on the Amalfi Coast
Even on holiday you can’t do without sport and physical activity? The Amalfi Coast is not only breathtaking sea views but, above all, a treasure trove of outdoor activities and experiences. With its combination of mountains, crystal-clear sea and enchanting landscapes, it offers a wide range of sports activities to indulge in. For those who never stop, let’s discover together the sports to be practised on the Amalfi Coast.
Those who want to dedicate themselves to trekking are spoilt for choice. There are a large number of mule tracks and paths, more or less long and with varying levels of difficulty, that reveal views of landscapes of extraordinary beauty. Traced in the past by farmers and traders to move from one point to another along the coast, they delight the many adrenalin-seeking tourists. In addition to the world-famous Sentiero degli Dei, we recommend the Sentiero dei Limoni (Lemon Path), which crosses one of the most important areas for the cultivation of the sfusato amalfitano variety, and that of the Santuario dell’Avvocata, where nature, history and religious tradition come together to perfection.
If you love cycling, cycling on the Amalfi Coast is an unparalleled experience. The area has almost no flat roads but this cannot be a reason to give up. You just need to be sufficiently trained (and if you are not trained, it is worth renting an e-bike). Among the routes to follow are: the Agerola Ring, which passes through the countryside of Conca dei Marini and Furore, before arriving in the centre of Agerola; and the Valico di Chiunzi, which connects the Amalfi Coast to the towns of Agro Nocerino-Sarnese via the Albino massif.
For the bravest athletes, the Amalfi Coast also offers plenty of opportunities for climbing. From Punta Campanella to Positano, from Agerola to Ravello, there are around 30 sites and 500 climbing routes. From the easier ones suitable for families and beginners, to the more challenging ones accompanied by a qualified instructor. Among the most beautiful climbs are the historical ones at Punta D’Aglio, Positano and Capo D’Orso as well as the more recent Orrido di Pino and Monte Faito.
For those who want an unforgettable, high-adrenaline experience, there is the zipline that flies over Furore and Conca dei Marini from above. Thanks to a special harness, you will be secured to a trolley that slides freely along a steel cable through the gorge of the Furore fjord, giving you moments of pure excitement and spectacular views. You do not need to be an expert, the zipline is suitable for people of all ages, all you need is a little courage.
Another activity to practice on the Amalfi Coast is parasailing, also known as parascending or parakiting. This is an extreme but not dangerous sport (suitable for everyone, even those who cannot swim), which consists of soaring with a parachute towed by a motor boat. The thrill is guaranteed as you come off the water surface and admire the coastline from an extraordinary and unique perspective.
The more sedate will certainly appreciate a canoe or kayak ride. Far from city traffic, crowded beaches and noise, you can fully experience the magic of the area and discover hidden gems among the cliffs of the coast. All it takes is a little preparation and technical knowledge. On many beaches along the coast, you can rent a canoe or kayak.
The more enterprising can try their hand at windsurfing or kitesurfing. In particular, a quiet and, at the same time, very suggestive place, ideal for practising these two disciplines is the beach at Cetara. The area, in fact, is particularly exposed to thermal winds. For windsurfing, we also recommend Marina di Praia in Praiano.
If you want to experience the sea as a protagonist, you can go scuba diving. You can admire with your own eyes the thousands of colours of the Mediterranean seabed and peek into the lives of the animals that inhabit it. Along almost the entire coastline you will find scuba diving operators who offer guided dives, rent the necessary equipment and organise courses at all levels. On request, it is also possible to photograph your dives.
